Air vs Ocean Freight to T&T: Which Should You Actually Choose?

Air freight is fast. Ocean is cheap for bulk. But the real answer depends on what you're shipping. Here's how to decide in under 2 minutes.

One of the most common questions we get at Swiftbox: should I ship air or ocean? The honest answer is it depends — but the decision is simpler than you think once you understand what each service is built for.

The Quick Answer

  • Under 50 lbs, not bulky, need it soon → Air freight
  • Over 50 lbs, bulky, or not urgent → Ocean LCL
  • Furniture, appliances, tires, mattresses → Ocean almost always
  • Electronics, clothing, shoes, small items → Air almost always
  • Full container of commercial goods → Ocean FCL

Air Freight — Fast, Direct, Tracked

Air freight moves from Miami to Trinidad in 3–5 business days after departure. Your cargo flies as freight and clears customs at Piarco International Airport. Swiftbox charges $1.99/lb — actual weight, no dimensional weight applied.

Best for

  • Clothing, shoes, and fashion
  • Electronics (phones, laptops, tablets)
  • Small appliances and accessories
  • Beauty and cosmetics
  • Books and media
  • Anything under 20 lbs
  • Items you need quickly

Pros and cons

  • Fast (3–5 business days from Miami)
  • Real-time tracking throughout
  • No minimum weight
  • Door-to-door delivery
  • More expensive per lb for heavy/bulky items

Ocean Freight (LCL) — Best Value for Bulk

Ocean LCL (Less than Container Load) freight is priced per cubic foot and takes 4–6 weeks from Miami to T&T. Your cargo shares a container with other shipments — you only pay for the space you use. Swiftbox departs Miami twice per month.

Best for

  • Furniture and large home items
  • Washing machines, fridges, dryers
  • Tires and automotive parts (no fluids)
  • Mattresses
  • Large appliances
  • Commercial merchandise and equipment
  • Anything over 50 lbs or that won't fit in a standard box

Pros and cons

  • Significantly cheaper per lb for heavy or bulky items
  • Can accommodate items too large for air cargo
  • Two sailings per month from Miami
  • Slow — 4 to 6 weeks transit time
  • Minimum charge applies
  • Not ideal for urgent shipments

Can I Use Both?

Yes. Your Swiftbox account handles both services. You can ship your urgent clothing order via air while your furniture order travels by ocean — they're tracked separately in your account. This is actually one of the advantages of using a single forwarder for everything.

What About FCL (Full Container)?

If you're importing a high volume of goods — enough to fill a 20ft or 40ft container — FCL (Full Container Load) gives you the best cost per cubic foot. This is typical for businesses importing merchandise or individuals doing a full household move. Contact Swiftbox for FCL pricing.
